Award-winning designer Tony Chi, of ‘tonychi and associates’, the New York based design company which designs restaurants, hotels and bars internationally, has re-invented a Japanese environment, linking the architecture, interior design, graphics and furnishings, where diners are immersed in an opulent Kyoto style.
Implementing architects SHH, whose award-winning portfolio includes The Greenhouse and Aura, have worked closely with Chi in creating this Japanese haven. Inspiration has been drawn from artfully presented cuisine, as well as the country of its origin.
The Umu experience starts even before the guest has entered the restaurant, as the secluded doorway only becomes obvious when a hand is passed over the small recess in the wenge timber and bronze finished door. Inside, a stunning ceiling feature, comprising individually crafted pieces of Murano glass fabricated in Italy and shaped in New York, has been carefully hung piece by piece.
This attention to detail also extends to the Japanese flower displays, a highly respected historical art form, which introduces a sense of balance and harmony to the restaurant.
