Originally built in 1909 as the headquarters for The Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, the historic 52-story clock tower is an iconic New York landmark.
It was the world’s tallest building for four years, until 1913, when it was surpassed by the Woolworth Building in downtown NYC.
The building was originally designed by the architectural firm of Napoleon LeBrun, and modeled after the Campanile (the bell tower) in Venice, Italy.
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1978 and a New York City landmark in 1989.
The hotel’s interior is designed by Ian Schrager in collaboration with architect David Rockwell.
